Coming Out of the Dark

As each state evaluates, and announces their plans to reopen, there are many factors a dealer must consider. Customer and associate safety, staffing, payroll, and of course the all too familiar CDC guidelines for ‘Social Distancing’ all sit atop most dealers lists of critical changes to business practices, and decisions needing to be made.

Marketing and brand awareness may be nestled just beneath, safety, compliance, etc.

  • How does a dealer effectively communicate their messaging to their target markets?
  • What message will make customers comfortable engaging in the purchasing process?
  • When is the right time to turn the proverbial spigot back on and broadcast to the masses that dealer is open and ready to sell some vehicles?

In a recent article in Digital Dealer, Chris Martin from Client Command outlines four things to “Turn the lights back on”.

Double-down on people, not media. Now, internet usage is skyrocketing, but just because more people are online, doesn’t mean your digital strategy is reaching actual shoppers. Truth is, most digital ad spend is connected to anonymous cookies. The faster you can turn on marketing to actual shoppers, the better the investment for you, and the more relevant the content for the customer you hope to serve.

Application: Prioritize marketing strategies that identify people who are actively shopping today. The Active Shopper Network® reports online shopping activity is fluctuating with the changing events of COVID-19. What a shopper is doing today might not match what that shopper does tomorrow. You want to get in front of shoppers as quickly as possible and stay with them while they shop. You do that through data, not a media channel.”

Now is not the time to waste valuable advertising dollars and wonder if you are effectively communicating to your target audience. Reach your markets Active Shoppers by utilizing Client Commands patented technology and have confidence your message is being seen by the right audience.

Mwanganza

The vision for Mwangaza began in 2005 when Tresor Yenyi, an international student from the Democratic Republic of Congo, had a friend ask him a simple question. “What do you need to make Christmas special for people in the DRC?” That was an easy answer for Tresor: fifty kg of rice, a few tooth brushes, some soap and a couple bags of sugar. To be able to offer these simple things would change the lives of innumerable children.

Precision Target-Marketing – Huh?

As a franchised automotive dealer, each month you choose how to spend your advertising dollars. The goal is to sell more cars! So, how do you know if you are marketing to someone that is even interested to buy? How do you know you are marketing in the right areas? How do you find more conquest customers? Are you spending enough? Are you spending too much? What if you had the ability to know exactly when someone decided to start looking for a car, what type of car they were looking for AND you could immediately begin marketing your message to them? Could you sell more cars? Well, not only could you sell more cars, but the company that created the patented technology to provide dealers with this precision target-marketing, GUARANTEES you will.

When a customer decides to begin the digital journey, which is different for every purchaser, they are most influenced while they are making decisions and forming opinions doing their own online research. An article written by David Mogensen, Google’s head of YouTube Ads, November 2015, The 5 Auto Shopping Moments Every Brand Must Own, said, “It’s essential that you be there and be useful in these online moments, if you want to be one of the two visits to dealerships they make when ready to buy.” The problem for dealers is you don’t know when a customer has actually begun this journey. So, how can you be there in these critical moments?

With access to over 90% of connected devices, including smart phones, tablets, and desktop pc’s, Client Command has created a network that monitors over 60 billion URL’s on the world wide web. This network can precisely determine, with both offline identity data and online shopping behavior, the GPS coordinates of a shopper looking to buy a vehicle. In most cases, this information is provided to Client Command’s dealer partner within the first 48 hours of a customer’s shopping journey. This technology allows both Client Command and the dealership to begin promoting your dealerships branding and messaging to a customer at the very beginning and throughout their journey.

Client Command, with their patented Active Shopper Network™, has answered this question and is the only company available, that begins marketing to these shoppers within 48 hours of identifying an active shopper. From the point this shopper is identified, to the point they make a vehicle purchase, Client Command uses omni-channel marketing to put your dealerships branding and messaging in front of them. Most lead providers can’t access this type of data for typically 60-90 days AFTER a customer has begun their journey. Once lead providers begin selling dealers this data, they sell it to whoever is willing to pay for it. Meaning, you and the dealership across the street have the same leads! Client Command will never share any Active Shopper Network™ information with any other dealer. Most importantly, your dealership will be guaranteed Conquest and Retained vehicle sales, not leads. With access to your own dealer dashboard, the question of where the sale came from is answered. Each attribution point is charted for every customer, so you know exactly what led to that customer purchasing and the work Client Command did to influence that sale. All of this is happening without any expectation of a dealer participating in the process.

To help dealers solve this modern-day dilemma, Advanced Dealer Solutions has partnered with Client Command, to bring dealers across the country access to the patented Active Shopper Network™. If you are a dealer looking to maximize your marketing dollars, enable precision-target marketing and translate that into guaranteed vehicle sales, contact our offices at 844-320-3722 or send an email to [email protected]

Auto Dealers Prove Resilient – AGAIN!

Despite all the doom and gloom being cast by industry pundits it appears auto dealers have once again shown they are some of the most resilient entrepreneurs on the planet!

In my 25-year automotive career I have heard the ‘end is coming’ time and time again. First, it was the advent of the internet and online listings. I remember sitting in a Paul Cummings training session and hearing him say “Bill Gates has changed our world”. The internet has certainly changed things, but dealers have still found a way to compete and grow. Then, it was CarMax, the big, bad pre-owned only dealer who was going to destroy gross profits on pre-owned vehicles. Yet, here we are over two-decades into the CarMax era and franchise dealers are still the predominant player in all the markets I am aware of. Next, we feared the publicly traded companies and how they would control market after market with their size and scale. Although the publics are performing well, they clearly don’t have such a stranglehold on the industry that non-publicly funded dealers cannot survive. Now, we are in the day and age where there are perceived existential threats, such as Carvana, Tesla, autonomous vehicles, ubiquity of ride-share users, and the just announced flying taxi’s being co-developed by Uber and Hyundai.

Yet, as I sit here today, the franchise dealer is still thriving. Just yesterday, Auto Remarketing published an article proving the resiliency of the dealer body AND pointed to several statistics which should excite anyone who lives and breathes this industry like I do.

  • Macroeconomic indicators such as GDP, employment, inflation, fuel prices and consumer sentiment remain highly favorable for dealers.
  • Other trends, such as lower interest rates, lower average monthly car payments and increasing dealership profits are helping dealers.
  • Most investors now believe that, for the foreseeable future, threats from autonomous cars, ride sharing, and electrification will not have a measurable impact on dealership values.
  • “The industry’s ability to grow earnings despite flat new vehicle sales really shows the resilience of the dealer model,” said Erin Kerrigan, founder and managing director of Kerrigan Advisors. “That impresses investors and, with more sellers coming to market, buyers are here, seeking acquisitions and investment in auto retail.”
  • Dealers have successfully shifted their focus from new vehicle sales to used vehicle sales, resulting in improved dealership profits, despite declining new vehicle sales. The average dealer is approaching a 1:1 used to new vehicle ratio, having increased the used to new ratio by 9.8% since 2018.
  • On average, dealers saw fixed operations revenue grow 5.1% through the third quarter of 2019. As a result, fixed absorption increased to the highest level since 2010. Today, dealers are less reliant on the new vehicle department to cover the costs of running their business.

Do dealers face change and uncertain times? Of course! Dealers have been and will continue to be faced with the evolution of technology and buyer habits just as any other business. The main difference I see is dealers are scrappy and have more grit than most. They are not going down without a fight. For those of us who depend on the retail automotive sector to provide for our families – I say a giant THANK YOU! Thank you to all the dealers who wake-up every day choosing to fight the good fight and not listen to the ‘experts’ who are predicting the end of time……again.
